During the chaos, everybody slept peacefully.

Scott and Margaret were in each other’s arms.

Joy slept with Bandit at her side.

Samantha dreamed about leaving the Engstrom House and going back home.

And Colleen dreamed about her little baby girl. She dreamed she was sitting in front of the fireplace, rubbing life back into her from the heat of the flames.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Colleen awoke to the sound of footsteps outside her bedroom door. Teresa was asleep next to her. She kissed Teresa’s forehead then left the bed. The flashlight was on her dresser. She crept into the hall. Nobody was there.

The dim flashlight cut into darkness. It seemed that no source of light could ever completely pierce the Engstrom House’s darkness as strongly as it could break into darkness elsewhere; there must have been things that the house wished to remain hidden.

CREAK!

CREEEAK!

CREEEAAAK!

Old floorboards weak under Colleen’s touch.

Coldness curled around her skin. Footsteps in the murky darkness that her flashlight failed to illuminate. Colleen followed the steps through darkness until a green glow brightened the hall. The door was open again.

Colleen was breathless. She followed the hazy shine and set her fingertips on the door. She was going to push it open when an unbearably freezing hand gently touched her arm and brought it down. Ambrose looked as if he had not been gone a day. He was in his same outfit she had last seen him in. It was as if he had been transferred one year into the future but all that time had passed for him in a single minute.

His hand slid along her arm, up her neck, and to her cheek. “I knew you’d be back.”

“I never stopped thinking about you.”

Colleen kissed him. His lips were icy and numbing.

“What’s in there?”

Ambrose shut the door. “It’s best you don’t look in there.”

“What’s in there?”

Ambrose grabbed her hand. “It doesn’t matter anymore now that we’re together. I’m so sorry I’ve been away from you for so long.”

Together they walked through the third floor until they came to the spiraling stairway. They sat down on its steps together. Colleen leaned on Ambrose’s shoulder. The coldness in his body never diminished.

“We can start over now,” Colleen said. “We can have another child. We can be a family again.”

“There’s nothing in the world I want more than that.” He squeezed her hand.

Another kiss.

“Why are your hands so cold?”

Ambrose said nothing.

Colleen grabbed both his hands in hers to warm them. “I wish we never spent a moment apart. Why did it take you so long to open the door?”

“None of that matters now that we’re together. Let’s enjoy this.”

Silence fell over them. Colleen shut her eyes. It was heaven.

“There’s a little girl that I found. Her name is Teresa. You’d love her. She has pretty blue eyes just like Amy did.”

“Uh-huh.”

“Let’s take her with us. This is no place for a little girl. Why wait for morning? Let’s leave now. Let’s go get her. Let’s drive away from here and never come back.”

Ambrose stood up, still holding her hands.
